Tuff Ship is indeed a "rollicking satirical adventure"; but with fully developed characters who you can like or loath - your choice. There is even room for redemption for some otherwise unlikeable characters - a message that there is hope for us all, even the incompetent and useless. I particularly liked the way psychological motivation/behavioural explanations are woven into the plot, it is clever and provides delicious insight into aspects of "the human condition". While the book is a Navy tale, it is written in a way that is easily understood by any readership. There is much absurdity in Navy, as there is in all big organisations, which can be difficult to recognise/navigate when you are young and new to the workplace. I finished reading Tuff Ship and was left with the thought "I think I know some of these people, in fact I think I have worked for some of them - but the reality is a...holes are everywhere and in every workplace, you could say they (a...holes) are universal".
